James Gunn’s ‘saddest’ writing, DC sequence ‘Creature Commandos’ Weasel backstory

James Gunn revealed that the origin story of the DC sequence Creature Commandos character Weasel is the “the saddest thing” the filmmaker ever wrote, and why.

Spoiler Alert for Season 1, Episode 4 of Creature Commandos, at the moment streaming on Max.

Gunn shed new gentle on Weasel, the misunderstood character first launched in The Suicide Squad (2021).

Opposite to the accusations that landed Weasel in Belle Reve jail, Gunn all the time believed the character wasn’t accountable for killing 27 youngsters.

“I didn’t know the specifics of it, but I always knew that it wasn’t fair,” Gunn defined.

Weasel’s haunting backstory unfolds in Episode 4 of Gunn’s animated DC sequence, titled Chasing Squirrels.

Written by Gunn, the episode dives into Weasel’s previous because the workforce tackles a mission involving Princess Ilana Rostovic (voiced by Maria Bakalova).

Weasel’s story is advised by flashbacks, starting along with his look close to an elementary faculty throughout Thanksgiving break. Regardless of his light nature and playful interactions with the children, an outdated man errors him for a menace and calls 911.

The tragedy spirals when the youngsters, together with Weasel, enter the varsity’s basement.

Harmless play escalates into chaos: a bottle of booze and a field of matches ignite a fireplace.

Because the outdated man fires at Weasel, a boiler explodes, killing the youngsters and the person, leaving one lady alive.

Weasel’s determined try to save lots of the lady is thwarted by arriving police, who assume he brought about the carnage. They incapacitate him as the varsity collapses, burying the lady alive.

Reflecting on the grim story, Gunn mentioned, “I think I just wrote the saddest thing that I’ve ever written in my entire life.”

His brother, Sean Gunn, who performs and voices Weasel, famous, “James himself has a darkness, and there’s a darkness to a lot of his work.”
