Southwest Washington’s Marie Gluesenkamp Perez was one in all simply 4 Democrats within the U.S. Home of Representatives to vote in favor of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, also referred to as the SAVE Act — a controversial invoice that may require proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections.

Critics say the act might disenfranchise hundreds of thousands, particularly married girls, who don’t have proof of citizenship available.

On Thursday, Perez launched an announcement relating to her vote.

“I do not support noncitizens voting in American elections — and that’s common sense to folks in Southwest Washington,” she stated. “Voting in our nation’s elections is a sacred right belonging only to American citizens, and my vote for the SAVE Act reflects that principle.”

She stated she believes the SAVE Act stands no likelihood of passage within the Senate as a result of filibuster, “as well as several deeply flawed provisions.”

She encourages Home management to as an alternative contemplate bipartisan laws that may go each chambers of Congress, she stated.
