“That was a physical transformation that was necessary for storytelling,” Brody defined. “But then that kind of opened me up, spiritually, to a depth of understanding of emptiness and hunger in a way that I didn’t know, ever.”

The movie, shot in reverse, required Brody to depict Szpilman at his most bodily depleted first, including to the emotional depth. 

Nevertheless, the expertise left lasting results, with the actor admitting to struggles with insomnia, panic assaults, and even PTSD following the position.

“I definitely had an eating disorder for at least a year. And then I was depressed for a year, if not a lifetime. I’m kidding, I’m kidding,” he added, hinting on the emotional weight of his dedication.

Brody’s dedication to his craft has led him into different distinctive conditions.
