Most rivers within the Oregon Nation had ferry crossings by the mid-1850s. That features the Columbia River close to Vancouver.
In 1846, John Switzler, a Hayden Island landowner, ran a ferryboat throughout the Columbia River between the island and the Hudson’s Bay Firm’s buying and selling publish, Fort Vancouver. Switzler and sons transported folks and animals throughout the Columbia River till the corporate withdrew to Canada in 1860.
