Greater than 100 demonstrators gathered Saturday at Fort Vancouver Nationwide Historic Website to protest latest firings there by the second Trump administration because it cuts the federal workforce.
The administration has not launched an official tally of Nationwide Park Service employees cuts, and federal staff are barred from talking publicly.
A number of staff on the fort have been terminated, based on a Fort Vancouver volunteer who requested to not be recognized for concern of retribution towards Park Service employees.
The fort is operated by the Nationwide Park Service, to not be confused with the U.S. Forest Service, which manages the Gifford Pinchot Nationwide Forest.
The Nationwide Park Service stated in a press release final week the federal company is planning to rent seasonal staff “to proceed enhancing the customer expertise as we embrace new alternatives for optimization and innovation in workforce administration.
“We are focused on ensuring that every visitor has the chance to explore and connect with the incredible, iconic spaces of our national parks,” based on the assertion.
Erica Lindemann, director of selling at Go to Vancouver WA, stated Fort Vancouver attracts vacationers.
“It is something that is unique to our city,” she stated.
Fort Vancouver drew almost 1 million guests in 2022, based on a 2023 Nationwide Park Service report.
Lindemann stated she thinks employees cuts on the fort will influence the customer expertise.
“Everyone is affected, including visitors, schoolchildren and people who walk here,” stated Mary Rose, government director of the nonprofit Associates of Fort Vancouver, which operates the bookstore there. (The fort is a well-liked vacation spot for native runners and walkers.)
Associates of Fort Vancouver makes use of data, books, actions and Native American artwork to assist share and interpret the positioning for guests, Rose stated.
“We all feel the pinch of a dwindling staff and recognize the responsibilities of both staff and volunteers,” Rose stated.
Staff, volunteers and associates of the positioning are a devoted group, she added.
Rose stated new actions and challenges are introduced every day, requiring everybody on the fort to be nimble.
Rose stated she and others with Associates of Fort Vancouver converse to guests all through the day.
“Many people are understanding and empathetic because they like being here. A few are angry and voice strong opinions,” she stated.
