Group needs to deliver whimsical artwork to downtown Washougal

The Washougal Arts and Tradition Affiliation needs to deliver whimsy to the sidewalks of downtown Washougal.

The nonprofit is on the lookout for artists to create 3D work that provide “an illusion of depth and challenge the viewer’s perception.”

Affiliation leaders hope the 3D artwork will appeal to Washougal residents and guests to town’s historic downtown.

“I have seen lots of examples of this kind of art and thought it would be good for Washougal,” board member Chuck Carpenter stated. “Some of them look like you’re going to walk into a pit. Others have little characters crawling out of the sidewalk. But the emphasis is on the three-dimensional optical illusion.”

Arts affiliation leaders will select sidewalk websites primarily based on the person designs chosen for the artwork challenge.

Carpenter stated a lot of the paintings will seemingly go in entrance of downtown Washougal companies, with a number of close to Washougal Metropolis Corridor.

“As the city proceeds with the new water park venture near City Hall, I thought it would be fun to have some (paintings) for people who are going into the play area,” Carpenter stated.

Metropolis leaders instructed Carpenter that so long as the Washougal Arts Fee accredited the challenge, the artwork can go on sidewalks.

“I went to the arts commission, and they thought it was a good idea, so we’re moving full speed ahead,” Carpenter stated.

The Washougal Arts and Tradition Affiliation is encouraging artists to submit a single portray or a sequence of work.

Although the artwork types and mediums will differ from artist to artist, Carpenter stated, there may be one medium that affiliation leaders need to keep away from.

“We don’t want chalk,” he stated. “It’s a lot of money to invest for something that’s going to wash away in the next rain. We want paint, and probably something over it to make it last. We know that with foot traffic, eventually they’ll wear down, wear away, and then we’ll look for some new ones.”

The affiliation will settle for artist proposals by means of March 15. Submissions should embrace a short description of the artwork proposal, a shade illustration, approximate dimensions, proposed funds together with time and supplies, a timeline and a waiver.

“We’ll see how many proposals we get, and we’ll fund as many as we can,” Carpenter stated. “We don’t have a definite budget … but we have a ballpark idea.”

The challenge is predicted to be accomplished by the tip of summer season.

Carpenter stated he’s excited to see the tip outcomes.

“We hope it’ll be cool. We hope that it will bring people to Washougal, at least after the word gets out,” he stated. “I’m looking forward to not only having some fun art in Washougal, but also giving some artists a job for a day or two.”
