Heroy hails Dena King as Biden’s best pick for US Attorney

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The President has nominated Dena J. King for the position of
U.S. Attorney representing the Charlotte region.
The South Mecklenburg High School graduate will serve as U.S. Attorney for the
Western District of North Carolina, which extends from Charlotte to Tennessee.
In 150 years, if King is approved by the Senate, she would be the first Black
woman to serve as the top prosecutor for the Western District of North Carolina.
As Deputy Criminal Chief for the Violent Crimes, Organized Crime Drug
Enforcement Task Forces, and Narcotics Units, she currently serves as Assistant
United States Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.
King served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney and an Assistant United
States Attorney, both in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District
of North Carolina, from 2014 to 2020.
From 2009 to 2014, King worked in the Securities Division of the North Carolina
Department of the Secretary of State.
In Charlotte, North Carolina, King worked as an Assistant District Attorney at the
Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office from 2006 to 2008. She earned
her J.D. from North Carolina Central University School of Law in 2006 and her
B.S., magna cum laude, from North Carolina State University in 2003.
As Dena King started her first job as an attorney, Rob Heroy was there.
In 2006, Rob and Dena both joined the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s
Office as prosecutors. Rob recalled how enjoyable it was to go to court with her.
During a recent interview, he told Fox News it’s “good having someone who grew
up in Charlotte, when you’re in court she knows everyone it’s like walking around
with the mayor.”
Rob now represents criminal defendants in state and federal courts, but he still
highly praises Dena.
“What I think is great about Dena is she understands both sides of the equation.
You’ve got someone who’s got a family, whatever they did is the worst moment of
the worst day of their life, and it doesn’t necessarily represent the person as a
whole.”
In Rob’s view, Dena is a dedicated public servant who has put in the work and is
more than prepared to be the US Attorney.
“She will approach the job as someone who can see problems that need to be
dealt with. We got gun violence all over the place in Charlotte, we got violent crime
rates that are spiraling, she also can handle by saying maybe answer isn’t putting
away for 15-20 years, maybe there’s an alternative to get them back with their
families and to make sure punishment is commensurate with the crime.”
After Dena was nominated, the next step was a Senate confirmation hearing. Fox
news asked Rob how he thought Dena would fare.
“If they could find any dirt on Dena I’d be amazed, I expect it’ll sail through.”
Rob hopes that his prediction is correct for the people of North Carolina.
