Kumail Nanjiani is opening up about how the fallout from Eternals left him shaken and unsure about his future within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 

Practically 4 years after the 2021 movie’s launch, the actor admits the expertise was removed from what he imagined when he first signed on.

Talking on the Working It Out podcast, Nanjiani revealed that he had agreed to a six-movie deal, together with commitments for a online game and even a theme park experience, believing Marvel would form the subsequent decade of his profession. 

“I was like, ‘This is going to be my job for the next ten years,’” he shared. 

“I signed on for six movies. I signed on for a video game. I signed on for a theme park ride. They make you sign on for all this stuff. You’re like, ‘This is the next ten years of my life. Okay, so I’ll be doing Marvel movies every year, and in between, I’ll do my own little things.’”

However when Eternals was met with underwhelming critiques and a combined field workplace response, the actor stated it hit him more durable than anticipated. 

“It came out, it got really bad reviews, and it didn’t do that well. It shattered me too much,” he admitted, including that the frustration in the end pushed him to hunt remedy. 

“For me, what really hit me, was just realizing too much of my self esteem was tied up in other people’s reaction to my work.”

Directed by Chloé Zhao, Eternals featured an ensemble forged together with Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Package Harington, Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Barry Keoghan and Brian Tyree Henry. 

Regardless of the unfavourable reception, Nanjiani nonetheless stands by the challenge. 

“There were a few too many people in Eternals, if the reviews are to be believed. I loved the movie. I’m very proud of the movie,” he stated.

The movie earned $402 million worldwide and at present holds a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Nonetheless, the way forward for the franchise stays unclear. 

Again in 2022, Nanjiani admitted he had “no idea” if a sequel was within the works, although reviews on the time recommended discussions have been taking place. “I honestly don’t know anything,” he stated. 

“I would love for Kingo to come back. I love playing that character. That one’s very fun to play, you’re just in a good mood. You do finger guns, you’re like a movie star – what’s not to love?”

For now, followers of Nanjiani and his scene-stealing Kingo should wait and see if Marvel decides to convey the character again, however the actor’s candid reflections present simply how a lot the highs and lows of Hollywood can form even a superhero’s journey.
