WorldNikki Haley calls Joe Biden's meeting with China's Xi Jinping 'embarrassing'

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley dismissed President Biden’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“How embarrassing this all is,” Ms. Haley said on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show.

The two presidents met Wednesday in San Francisco at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit to discuss trade, Taiwan and U.S.-Chinese relations. They also discussed ways to stop the flow of fentanyl into the United States, along with how to reestablish military-to-military communication.

Missing from the talks was the issue of illegal immigration at the U.S. southern border, which the former South Carolina governor noted in the Hannity interview to show the president’s weakness surrounding national security and to point out it was a topic worth discussing since some of the migrants are coming from China.

“It is really serious that you have just the thousand that we know from Yemen and Lebanon and Iran. That doesn’t count Afghanistan. You are talking about China and Russia,” she said. “All it takes is one. It takes one to have a 9/11 moment. We have got to secure this border. You’ve got to stop having that flow come in.”

She pointed out that Hamas broke through Israel’s barrier and the U.S. doesn’t even have one.

“They are coming through, and we are not vetting them,” she said. “We don’t know who they are. We don’t know what’s happening.”

The former U.S. ambassador to the U.N. stressed that something needs to be done about the border or “something bad’s going to happen.”

“We can’t afford to put Americans at risk, and that’s what Joe Biden’s doing every day,” she said. “He’s putting America at risk. A president has one job, and that’s to keep their people safe. And he has not done that.”

Mr. Biden told reporters after the meeting Wednesday that he and Mr. Xi will have direct contact in future months.

The U.S. president said he spoke about human rights and he “welcomes the positive steps” they took to strengthen diplomacy.

“In the months ahead, we’re going to continue to preserve and pursue high-level diplomacy with the [People’s Republic of China] in both directions, to keep the lines of communication open, including between President Xi and me,” Mr. Biden said. “He and I agreed that each one has to pick up the phone call directly and will be heard immediately.”
