Producers Guild Nominations Keep ‘Dune’ in Play

Is this a best-picture preview?

The Producers Guild of America announced its 10 nominees for best feature film on Thursday, and the group is considered one of the strongest signs of where the Oscar wind is blowing: Over the last three years, only one eventual best-picture nominee (“The Father”) made it into the best-picture lineup of the Academy Awards without first being nominated for the PGAs.

Here is the PGA list of nominees:

Being the Ricardos

Belfast

CODA

Don’t Look Up

Dune

King Richard

Licorice Pizza

The Power of the Dog

Tick, Tick … Boom!

West Side Story

The PGA Awards favor blockbuster product — in previous years, you’ve seen nominees like “Skyfall,” the 2009 “Star Trek,” and “Wonder Woman” — so these nominations are bad news for “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “No Time to Die,” two expensive action films trying to muscle their way into the best picture race. The highest-grossing film in this year’s PGA lineup is “Dune,” which made $398 million even as it was simultaneously released on HBO Max.

Those notable omissions aside, the PGA nominees include many of this season’s most-recognized films, like Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog,” the Kenneth Branagh drama “Belfast,” and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story.” And after a strong showing with the Screen Actors Guild, films like “King Richard” and “Being the Ricardos” once again proved their muscle.

When Oscar recognizes a movie that the PGAs snubbed, it’s almost always something smaller and more intimate like “Winter’s Bone,” “Room” or “Amour.” That leaves an opening for “The Lost Daughter,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” and the Japanese drama “Drive My Car,” which has been sweeping prizes from critics groups, but the PGAs may spell the end for glitzier, bigger-budget contenders like “House of Gucci” and “Nightmare Alley.”

Winners will be announced in a ceremony March 19.
