ArtsSF’s Modern Jewish Museum Publicizes Momentary Closure

San Francisco’s Modern Jewish Museum (CJM) will near the general public for no less than a yr and scale back its workers over the following a number of months, the establishment introduced immediately, November 13, citing declining customer numbers and monetary difficulties. The museum is slated to indefinitely shutter its galleries on December 15 and can supply free admission to all guests till then.

“The CJM has been weathering a challenging financial landscape, compounded by attendance and general support that have not fully recovered since the pandemic,” a museum spokesperson stated.

“This decision, while extremely difficult, is a proactive measure to ensure The CJM’s long-term sustainability,” the spokesperson continued, including that the transfer doesn’t “represent a permanent closure of the institution.”

“It is far better for us to take necessary steps towards restructuring now, rather than waiting until we no longer have options,” the museum’s Interim Government Director Kerry King stated in an announcement.

King stepped into the position after the museum’s earlier Government Director Chad Coerver resigned final June following a quick tenure of below two years. He succeeded Lori Starr, who left the museum on the finish of 2020 after being at its helm for over seven years.

“This decision does not come without significant pain because it will affect our team of extraordinary and deeply dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to fulfill The Museum’s mission,” King added.

This previous spring, the anti-Zionist Jewish group California Jewish Artists for Palestine (CJAP) protested the museum over its alleged lack of transparency surrounding “Israeli governmental and pro-Zionist foundation funding.” The motion concerned the withdrawal of paintings from the continuing exhibition California Jewish Open, an open-call present that was initially scheduled to run by subsequent April. Two months later, the museum was the location of one other CJAP demonstration that noticed one artist featured within the present break off a bit of her sculpture.
